A few weeks ago deep in lockdown I was delighted to spend time recordning a podcast with Thriving Language, Gloucestershire's leading early years consultancy run by the two Beckies, one an experienced Eary Years Lead and the other a renowned Speech and Language Therapist.  Thriving Language, www.thrivinglanguage.co.uk, works with early years providers to explore how children learn, communicate and engage with the world around them.  They offer early years and education online courses and face to face training for anyone working or living with children.  The ladies are real specialists in their field and I was honoured to be invited to take part in their award winning podcast series.

During the podcast we focussed on how babies and children learn to talk and how beneficial hearingmore than one language is to their overall cognitive and social development. We explored why babies are known to be "sponges" when it comes to learning langauges and the importance of the infant months under 12 in terms of building natural accents and working towards fluency.   We explored how the benefits extend to increased intellect, cognitive advantage, advanced vocabularies, heightened social and communication skills, improved creativity, analytical and problem solving skills and how this can all lead to a step up when starting school but also wider socio-economic benefits as adulthood is reached.

We also touched on some of the common myths that speaking additional languages can lead to delayed speech development in bilingual children and outdated notions that children in multilingual homes should have English spoken in the household to ensure they are able to communicate in an early years environment.

Embracing language learning at such a young age brings benefits to children and we also look at how early years providers can capitalise on parent demand to their commericial advantage by looking at partnering with Lingotot and bringing language learning into their settings.

So grab a cuppa, put your feet up and listen to how language learning can transform your early years setting: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1056463/8422115
