Celebrating European Day of Languages

Today is European Day of Languages, a day organised by the Council of Europe and the European Union in the hope of encouraging language learning across Europe.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to explore the diversity of Europe and in particular, the huge number of languages spoken. Even within the UK, there are thought to be almost 300 languages spoken - roughly 3% of the world’s total!

Vicky Gough, of the British Council, has said: “Languages are invaluable for a generation growing up in an increasingly connected world.”

At Lingotot, we believe the European Day of Languages promotes an important message and we have been keen to support this in our programme. Throughout the UK and Ireland, we have been involved in a whole host of fun activities and have partnered with schools and nurseries, offering themed lessons and assemblies. We have also developed our adult learner programme and launched LingoChat in more areas, encouraging adults to join in and learn a language too!

Angela Sterling, Founder of Lingotot, says: “There has been a lot in the news about Britain’s dwindling interest in languages at school and it’s sad reading. We really hope that the publicity surrounding the European Day of Languages and the activities we have been running for both our Lingotot and LingoChat programmes really support the message behind this day - language learning is for everyone!
