Did you watch the Channel 4 documentary Old People's Home for 4 Year Olds?

In the two-part programme, viewers were given a fly on the wall viewpoint as a group of four year olds did all of their usual nursery activities in a residential care home for six weeks. The pre-schoolers were given a series of everyday nursery-type tasks to complete with a group of elderly volunteers – all of whom were residents at the home.

The children and residents went for walks together, completed arts and crafts projects and even monitored the progress of a group of baby ducklings! Watching their relationships develop into strong friendship bonds was a delight to watch on screen with the viewer quickly moved from laughter to tears.  All along the residents' health was checked and at the end of the experiment, it was revealed that results for mobility, mood and memory had improved!

Here at Lingotot we had special reason to be moved by the show....we proudly teach HALF of the children featured in the programme! Rachel from Lingotot South Bristol was the regular languages teacher at the nursery and knew the 4 year-olds very well indeed. She says, "the children were wonderful to teach during Lingotot sessions at nursery, they were so enthusiastic and full of beans! I'm not surprised they improved the wellbeing of the elderly residents - they certainly cheered me up every week and kept me on my toes!"

You can watch the show on All 4 if you missed it. And click here to view sessions led by Rachel, or perhaps you'd like to join a class elsewhere in the country?
