How Did Lingotot Rugby Establish Themselves During a National Lockdown?

Lingotot Rugby, set up by Layla Riches, started running their language classes amid the first national lockdown of 2020 and haven’t looked back. Launching during lockdown is no mean feat, but Lingotot Rugby have proved that businesses can and have flourished. They first began their online classes in May, running Saturday and After School Clubs twice a week in Spanish and French. Due to their popularity, these classes will continue into 2021 when we can also look forward to the introduction of their face-to-face classes.

Layla, a mum of two, has always recognised the importance of language learning from a young age. At home, she speaks more than one language so her children can benefit from the opportunities multi-language skills present. After several years of teaching and extensive research, Layla found Lingotot. She immediately recognised the gap in services like this in her local community and set into motion the foundation of Lingotot Rugby.

Layla’s passion coupled with this local demand meant her online classes were an instant hit. One parent, Melissa, said ‘our daughter Lola has been attending Layla’s Spanish lessons over the lockdown period via Zoom and has thoroughly enjoyed every session finding them fun and interesting. She loves the way Layla uses a mixture of songs, opportunities to learn new vocabulary, stories and games. The props she uses are a good addition to the oral focus of the lessons. Lola feels valued and appreciated by Layla and supported to have a go with new vocabulary.’

While 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone, it has also been a positive turning point for Layla and Lingotot Rugby. When asked to reflect on her online classes, Layla said ‘it has been lovely watching the children learn through technology and a massive ‘well done’ to them all by adapting to this online method of learning. You are never too young or too old to learn, so always believe in your abilities. Learning a new language is a gift that you do possess.’
