South Durham Lingotot Centre

Bonjour! ¡Hola! Guten Tag!

I'm Joanna and I run Lingotot and LingoChat in the South Durham area. I love languages! I have a degree in Modern Foreign Languages, (I speak French, German, Spanish and some Dutch) and have over twenty years' experience in teaching languages to children and adults.

At Lingotot South Durham we offer French, German and Spanish for kids 0-11. We run community classes as well as bringing languages to children in nurseries and primary schools. If you'd like Lingotot to lead language sessions at your local community centre, church hall, school or nursery, please do get in touch! Lingotot classes are fun, interactive and designed to introduce children to a new language through games, songs, stories and crafts. Our classes are suitable for babies, toddlers, young children and their parents or carers so the whole family can enjoy learning a new language together!

Lockdown has meant that many of our usual community classes have had to move online. But learning at home doesn't mean missing out! On the contrary, our 30 minute Zoom sessions are great fun for children and offer you the chance to finish a bit of work, get the lunch ready or just enjoy a peaceful cup of tea while we entertain the kids!

Recently we started offering classes just for adults, too! We call these classes LingoChat and they're a great way for you to make friends, have a laugh and learn a language. The classes are aimed at beginners and take place in informal settings like a pub or cafe (Covid restrictions permitting) or online. No homework. No pressure. Just fun!

If you have any questions about Lingotot South Durham, please email me at

We look forward to welcoming you to one of our classes soon!

We started working with Joanna from Lingotot in April 2018. Our older children, aged 3 and 4 years old, accessed twice weekly Spanish sessions. Sessions are very much fun based and include lots of movement, games, stories and songs. Our children worked towards performing for their parents and families. It was amazing to see just how much they had learned. The story of The Hungry Caterpillar was a huge hit with children, staff and parents!
We chose Spanish for the children as the Bishop Auckland area is developing Spanish links through the work of others in the area including Auckland Castle/The Auckland Project. We also thought that Spain would be a destination that our families would consider when booking a holiday.
It is also of great importance to us that we provide the children with opportunities that may support them later in life. Perhaps some of our children will work or study in a Spanish speaking country!
We recently worked with Joanna to celebrate the European Day of Languages 2018; the theme being ‘languages at work’. The children learned phrases for some familiar professions. They repeated the words in Spanish along with actions representing the jobs and played games using colourful props and sang songs in Spanish with lots of repetition to reinforce the learning.
Joanna and Lingotot came highly recommended to us and in turn we highly recommend her to others. She is a pleasure to work with and we all look forward to her sessions. Joanna is very flexible in her approach, the bespoke sessions for European Day of Language being a good example of this.

French Summer Camp

Just a huge thank you, Rose had an amazing time. She is normally very shy and I was unsure how she would respond to the language camp, however she loved it. When picking her up on the first day she talked non stop for 20 minutes about what she had done and learnt. The next morning she was dressed and bag packed 3 hours early. I cannot recommend the Summer Camp highly enough. Rose not only had an amazing time but was very keen to share her new learning. I was expecting that she would go to the first day and then not want to go back and she does struggle as is very shy. However she is upset that she can not attend next week.”

LingoChat Spanish - I would highly recommend

I am doing an evening class with Joanna for Spanish and alongside learning in a fun way it is so nice to virtually meet other people. Joanna is very well prepared, approachable and professional. I would highly recommend.

Give it a go!

Leo has been a lingotot for 18 months now, and his understanding of Spanish is wonderful thanks to
Joanna. Her way of teaching, patience and ‘general loveliness’ is what makes her lessons special. We have recently stopped lessons due to other commitments but still try to speak Spanish where we can.

If you want to give Spanish (or any other language!!) a go with your little ones, please go to Joanna! 🇪🇸

We have tried for months to get Henry to wave hello and goodbye but to no avail. However on Sunday (just two days after his first Lingotot lesson) we were playing and I started saying hello and goodbye in Spanish whilst waving and he waved back!😲 And now whenever we say the greetings in Spanish he waves like mad. He also never found playing peekaboo much fun but I now do that in Spanish and he giggles his head off! 😄

My daughter really looks forward to it

I have been taking my 7 year old daughter to Lingotot for Spanish in Bishop Auckland. Joanna is so natural and lovely. The sessions are a good combination of games, songs, stories (even a snack). It's great how some songs and stories are already familiar in English which really helps understanding. My daughter really looks forward to it. Thank you!

My 4 year old little boy goes to lingotots Spanish and he really enjoys it. Joanna is great with the little ones and there is a good mixture of activities to keep them all engaged. My little one looks forward to going every week and has picked up lots of Spanish vocab through the songs and stories :) x

Highly recommended!

I would highly recommend Lingotots with Joanna Bruce.  Her sessions are highly interactive, well planned and enthusiastically delivered.  Our children really look forward to her sessions in school.  It is great to see the smile on their faces.  The children in our school have made so much progress learning a second language with Joanna even through lockdown when she provided online learning videos.  I can't thank her enough for the work she has done in school!

Lingotots brings Spanish to life.

Lingotots brings Spanish to life.  The children love our after school sessions.  Joanna ensures that the children have a variety of engaging activities to develop their knowledge and love of the Spanish language.  She's very creative, ensuring learning is fun, and the children always leave the session enthusing about what they have done.
