Why Fun Learning is the Best Kind of Learning

Sound familiar? You’re driving along the M50, and you notice that your children know every last word of that Beyonce song. In fact, now you’ve got it rattling around your head, too. And you think to yourself: “where was that incredible memory when they sat the spelling test last week?”

The truth is, you were just the same as a child, are we right? Fess up. If Madonna’s 'Like a Virgin' came on the radio right now, you’d know most of the words, even though that song was released over thirty-six years ago. 

So why have these lyrics stayed with you all of these years? The answer is simple: pop songs were fun in the '80s, and they're still fun today. And newsflash, people: the best kind of learning is fun learning. We didn't make the rules, we just play by them.

Fun learning

Let’s face it: kids learn without even realising it. Lingotot harnesses this fun to maximise learning. Sneaky? Oh, absolutely. Effective? You bet it is.

Now, let's experiment. If I were to ask you to explain the mnemonic rules of English spelling, and you were not allowed to Google it, would you be able to? Most of us would draw a blank. However, if I were to ask you to finish the sentence 'I before e, except after…' you would all chime 'c' as the correct answer. This is because your clever teacher made this rule stick to your brain for all of eternity by using a rhyme. The alphabet is another example, where many of us sing our way through it to figure out what comes after the letter p. Don't deny it, I can practically hear you humming 'lmnop.'

When it comes to learning new things, a child's brain is like a sponge. Now is the perfect time to learn, while it's fun and not a chore. Let's not associate foreign language learning with homework, exams, and conjugating verbs. Let's associate it with fun and laughter.
